There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from nearby Thailand, where casino betting is banned. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively tiny location in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a three to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of limitations requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; still, financing sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 1700, and even though visas are apparently needed to cross, there are methods around this, as is correct of many border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling den, contains 150 slots and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machine games and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a comprehensive resort and hotel compound that features numerous conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which offers ten thousand sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and 88 gaming tables.
